Full Circle: From Practice to Purpose in Kenya
There are moments on retreat that stay with you long after the journey ends—and this was one of them.
On our recent Emily & Lucy Retreat, we had the privilege of deepening our connection with the AYP (African Yoga Project) in a way that felt truly aligned with our values: supporting local communities, working consciously, and ensuring that everything we bring into our retreats has a meaningful story behind it.
Before arriving in Nairobi, we decided to source our yoga mats, blocks, and belts locally—made by one of AYP’s talented trainees. Each piece was made using accessible, local materials, crafted with care, skill, and purpose. These weren’t just props; they were part of a bigger story—one of opportunity, education, and empowerment.
Early in the retreat, we were joined by Arafa from AYP, who came as a guest teacher. She shared the heart behind the project—how yoga is being used as a tool for transformation across communities in Kenya, creating pathways for young people through training, employment, and leadership. Hearing her speak grounded our experience in something much bigger than ourselves. It reminded us that yoga extends far beyond the mat.
As our journey unfolded, these mats and props became part of our daily rhythm—held in movement, laughter, challenge, and stillness. They supported every moment of connection.
As our retreat drew to a close, a new chapter began.
After the retreat ended, we returned to Nairobi. Arafa greeted us once more, now bridging our experience with the local community. Together, we delivered the mats and bolsters to a project for mothers and daughters, supported by AYP’s founders.
Watching the space come alive was something special. The same mats that had held our retreat experience were now passed on—ready for new beginnings.
It was simple, powerful. Nothing wasted. Everything shared.
This is what we mean when we say we carefully consider every part of our retreats—from who we work with to where resources come from and where they go next. It’s about creating a ripple that lasts beyond our time together.
One of the most touching moments came in a message from Kathryn, founder of AYP:
“Your generosity made our Women's Day celebrations so special, may you keep winning !!”
Those words stayed with us. Ultimately, this is what it’s all about—connection, intention, and creating experiences that give back as much as they give. It is a reminder that our work leaves lasting marks, both within ourselves and among those we meet.
For us, retreat isn’t just about stepping away from everyday life. It’s about stepping into purpose, into community, and into lasting meaning—together. Our journey doesn’t end when the retreat does; it continues through every ripple we help create.
